  • Cantarell is the largest  oil field in Mexico
  • In 2007, it was reported that the field has produced around 12.4 billion barrels of oil
  • Discovered in 1976
  • Started operation in 1981
  • Peak of production: 2004
  • Offshore
  • Composed of four subfields: Akal, Nohoch, Chac, and Kutz
  • Fields formed from rubble caused by an asteroid years ago
  • In 2006, Cantarell produved 55% of the world average
  • Decline blamed on falling resevoir pressure (1979)
  • PEMEX injected nitrogen into the resevoir to counteract declining pressure: a success
  • Started to decline again :(
