Cantarell Field
- Cantarell is the largest oil field in Mexico
- In 2007, it was reported that the field has produced around 12.4 billion barrels of oil
- Discovered in 1976
- Started operation in 1981
- Peak of production: 2004
- Offshore
- Composed of four subfields: Akal, Nohoch, Chac, and Kutz
- Fields formed from rubble caused by an asteroid years ago
- In 2006, Cantarell produved 55% of the world average
- Decline blamed on falling resevoir pressure (1979)
- PEMEX injected nitrogen into the resevoir to counteract declining pressure: a success
- Started to decline again :(
